Our Homes

What It Takes to Upkeep Our Homes

Volunteers at GoldwoodWhen you own a home, it often seems like there’s a never-ending list of projects and things to fix – some major, some minor … but all necessary to keep your home comfortable, safe and secure. Keeping everything in working order just makes sense. After all, for most of us, our home is our single biggest financial investment.

The same is true at Angels’ Arms, except we are keeping up with the needs at 12 different homes. And when we invest in upkeep for each house, we are not only enhancing 12 buildings, we are also investing in the lives of children.

With 12 homes, our maintenance and repair list is always long. Fortunately, Angels’ Arms has many volunteers and professional partners who help with the monumental task of making sure that our homes meet the needs of large, active families. Angels’ Arms has always succeeded because of the incredible commitment of volunteers, donors and businesses, and we are thankful for those who volunteer their time and expertise to paint, landscape or do minor repairs.

Yet as we continue to add homes, Angels’ Arms has a significant and growing need for our friends and donors to support the needs of our homes, which are at the heart of our mission.

Here are a few ways you can help:

Tom at CastlemanMake a donation to our Home Maintenance Fund – we use this fund throughout the year to purchase materials and supplies, pay for labor, and hire contractors and subcontractors when needed.

Donate gift cards for home stores such as Home Depot, Lowes or Hoods.

Host a supply drive for items such as:

  • Paint brushes and rollers – all sizes;
  • Painters tape and tarps;
  • Joint compound, spackle, caulk, utility knives;
  • Rakes, wheelbarrows, shovels;
  • Work gloves;
  • Batteries, lightbulbs and furnace filters;
  • Gardening tools, tree trimmers, hedge shears;
  • Yard waste bags.

Join our volunteer “on call” team for minor repairs – if you have specific skills such as plumbing, electric, carpentry, painting or landscaping, we would love to add you to our list of potential volunteers to contact when specific needs come up. We also could use some volunteers with some “muscle” or who don’t mind getting a little messy.

Gather a group of friends or co-workers and adopt a house for on-going maintenance – a quarterly work day would make a huge difference at any of our homes!

Another Graduate in the Angels’ Arms Family

Jasmine's Graduation

Monique (left) standing proudly with her sister Jasmine at her graduation.

We felt so much joy as we watched Jasmine walk across the stage at her graduation this past weekend. Jasmine is the oldest of our Angels’ Arms young adults. She lived in the inaugural Angels’ Arms’ home for over 10 years but her journey to her diploma was not an easy one. Having worked through many personal challenges and hardships, Jasmine graduated as a Pharmacy Technician from St. Louis College of Health Careers on April 2 and is now employed in her field. Her face glowed with pride as she was able to share this long-awaited moment with her family and friends.

Jasmina, like her sister Monique (pictured) has proven that no matter the barriers we face, strength and perseverance can see us through to the end. To see the smiles on these sisters’ faces speaks volumes. We’re so proud of Jasmine and look forward to assisting many more youth in the Angels’ Arms Life Launch program to achieve their goals.

On March 1st, the newest Angels’ Arms family moved into house #12, located in Florissant. The lovely 4 bedroom home originally belonged to the Hoffman family who built it many years ago and raised 3 boys there. After the parents passed away, the children decided they would donate their beautiful home to Angels’ Arms. Now it’s a safe haven to 4 foster children and foster mom Ramona Spencer.

12th Annual Trivia Night – A total success, no question about it!

Q. How did the Annual Angels’ Arms Trivia Night come about and become so successful?
A. Two amazing families and hundreds of fantastic supporters!

On Friday, January 29, the generous Kallaos and Kamburis families and held at Christian Brother College High School (CBC), hosted our 12th Annual Angels’ Arms Trivia Night from 6-10 P.M.

TRIVIA for BLOG

The amazing Kallaos and Kamburis families!

The two families have hosted Trivia Night for Angels’ Arms since 2005. Carol Kamburis says the idea first came about when they volunteered to be in charge of the Family Activities Committee and had to come up with a way to increase funding.

All proceeds benefit our foster families, giving them a chance once a month to join in fantastic group activities they may not otherwise be able to afford. Thanks to the kindness of our community, 2016 was a record-breaking year! Over four hundred Angels’ Arms supporters flooded the room and worked together to raise more than $19,000! The event included a 20-item silent auction, with many of the packages being graciously donated. The auction alone raised over $1,600!

“We appreciate our generous trivia night supporters that have helped grow this fundraiser over the years into a huge success!” commented Kamburis, and the rest of us couldn’t agree more!

From our hearts to yours, thanks to each and every one of you who came out and spent the evening with us— your bigheartedness is sure to make this a year our foster kids won’t soon forget! Here’s hoping next year will be even more spectacular!

Another Successful “New Kicks 4 Foster Kids” Outing

Zeke showing off his new shoes!

Zeke showing off his new shoes!

For the 3rd year in a row, The Finish Line and their wonderful staff at South County Mall opened their doors to Angels’ Arms foster families for a private shopping experience on Sunday, January 17.

The amazing Finish Line staff!

The amazing Finish Line staff!

When kids enter our nonprofit, many of them have little to no clothing of their own. Heather Jones, President of the Angels’ arms Junior Board and a dedicated volunteer, believes that the shoes this event provides “not only represent something that is

truly theirs, but it also shows them that people out there care about them and their well-being.”

Because of our promise to keep siblings together in a safe, stable family environment, many parents that foster through Angels’ Arms have up to six children in their home at once, thus resulting in sticking to a tight budget.

Each household only receives an average of $15 per child per month from the state, so an expense such as new, brand name shoes is a luxury that many foster families cannot afford.

All ready with their new shoes!

All ready with their new shoes!

One of our foster moms, Katie Brown said, “It’s not very often someone says to a foster kiddo,’ Pick out whatever shoes you want, brand new, any brand, any color, it’s all up to you!’… The excitement lasts much longer than just the shopping experience.  There’s always a level of happiness and joy about wearing their new shoes to school.”

Angels’ Arms firmly believes in allowing foster children to be children, and it was through the generosity of our community and donations collected on Giving Tuesday, that allowed us to provided all 65 of our kids with a brand new pair of shoes.

THANK YOU for making the 2016 New Kicks for Foster Kids such a resounding success!

Happy National Mentor Appreciation Month!

DID YOU KNOW….January is National Mentor Appreciation Month, and the perfect month to begin our journey with Life Launch’s mentor program!

liym-slide32

Each of our youth, ages 14-21 have the potential to achieve anything they put their minds to…be it graduating college to pursue careers in media or engineering or giving to others through a career in nursing. But to get there, they must overcome the obstacles life has thrown their way. Their stories reflect the trauma of child abuse and neglect, loss of siblings and parents, people moving quickly in and out of their lives and ALL before finding a home in Angels’ Arms. Many fear what the future holds because their past and present are often painful to confront BUT THEY ARE NOT WITHOUT HOPE!!

HOPE of a reliable adult who can walk beside them and won’t give up on them. HOPE of a relationship with someone who will hear what they have to say and encourage their voice. HOPE of a connection to new opportunities. HOPE of a friend to challenge them to dream and strive to achieve that dream.

Their call has been heard, with over 20 mentor applicants stepping up for our youth!! From attorneys and teachers to retirees and graduate students, each person brings with them valuable life experiences, passion impacting the community, and the excitement of being the first to make this endeavor with the youth!

Do you have what it takes to be a mentor? Check out us out at angelsarm.org/life-launch to learn more! Contact Amanda O’Neal at amanda@angelsarms.org with any questions about how you can make a difference in the life of a youth!
